Well it’s been more than a year, almost two actually, since Matty set off on his 16,000km walk around the EU to help prevent child sexual abuse. On May 31st 2013 he took his first steps of this massive journey along London’s Southbank before walking off into uncertainty to ultimately change the law!
A lot has happened since then, upon stopping in every capital city of every EU member state along the way to hold meetings, conferences and interviews, the project has snow-balled.
Matty has since met with the Pope who blessed him and the project and spoke at an event at the Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva. Best of all, an exciting and lucrative meeting at the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, enabled the project’s manifesto to reach all of the 47 countries of Europe and not just the 29 he was aiming for.
The icing on the cake however was when Matty was awarded the prestigious title of Top Scot as voted for by the people of Scotland at the Spirit of Scotland Awards, Nov 2014.
A well earned title after walking literally thousands of kilometres and losing all ten toe nails!
So much has happened that will make for an amazing and unique story indeed! However, the journey isn’t over yet… Before he walks the last mile down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, he will pass through Glasgow on Feb 3rd to say hiya to his friends and supporters – all covered by the BBC of course. After greeting the press at George Sq he will walk round to the Royal Conservatoir of Scotland where at 7pm he will be met with more familiar faces and bagpipes.
This is where we would love you to join us for an emotional and important evening of speeches, music and drinks! It will be a memorable occasion to say the least (mind your hankies and waterproof mascara…)
Come and show your support, say hello to the walking phenomenon that is Matthew McVarish and be part of the start of the end of child sexual abuse.
